I Is Risen
Posted in It's All About Me, I Like Music on February 24th, 2008Like Nosferatu rising from his coffin in that really bad black-and-white movie, so I return to the land of the blogosphere.
Not a huge post today. Basically I’m just saying I survived my surgery (and the really shitty week that accompanied it), I still have a girlfriend, I’m still employed, and all kinds of stuff like that there.
Something kind of bittersweet did happen today, though, that I might as well fill space reporting on. Stalwart used music shop CD Replay on Bloor closes tomorrow, and Metal and I decided to check out its final day. Here’s a list of what I left with:
- Soundgarden’s Superunknown album (a repurchase from back in the original grunge days)
- The Pearl Jam albums Yield, Code, Vitalogy and Binaural
- Ray Charles & Friends Super Hits (everyone needs some Ray in their collection)
- Beaster by Sugar
- Weight, Come In And Burn, and Nice by Rollins Band
That and a CD player case for $0.25. All told, I got out of there for just under $40. Good things come to those who wait for a store to go out of business and aren’t too proud to pick its carcass, I suppose.
I have to admit, though, I am one of the folks who are responsible for the death of the record store. These days, I do most of my purchasing online. My rare physical CD purchase is as an add-on to an Amazon.ca order (to bump up my order total to get free shipping), with my even fewer major-label downloads coming from Puretracks.com. My favourite music site, however, has become Zunior.com for various reasons, not the least of which being selection, price, and no copy protection. That last point is vital, seeing as I have a Sony Minidisc player that doesn’t use any of the Windows Media Player or iPod standard rights management crap.
Speaking of Zunior.com, I’m really loving their podcast this month. Lots of good punk bands, a little bit of bluegrass, and even an intelligent novelty act or two. Get it here, unless you have a newer iPod or some other spiffy music player that plays the M4A format, in which case, get it here. You won’t be disappointed. And if you are, you’re not my friend anymore and I’m not splitting my sandwich with you.
